Book review: “Decolonizing and indigenizing education in Canada”

Congratulations Shelina Adatia on your latest publication!

Adatia, S. (2021). [Review of the book Decolonizing and indigenizing education in Canada, by S. Cote-Meek & T. Moeke-Pickering]. The Canadian Journal of Action Research, 21(3), 142-144.

As I write this book review, the world has just witnessed the Israeli apartheid against Palestinians – one of the most horrific consequences being the murder of 67 children in Gaza. More recently, we have learnt of the heart-breaking discovery of the remains of 215 children at the site of a former residential school in Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc First Nation, previously known as the Kamloops Indian Band. Yet, in Canada, many citizens, leaders, and institutions refuse to acknowledge that these tragedies are examples of ongoing genocides – genocides in which Canada plays an active role. Decolonizing and Indigenizing education in our so-called ‘home and native land’ has thus never been more important.
